Bay House, Hackney

Full refurbishment, retrofit and extension of an Edwardian end of terrace house in Hackney. To overcome the steep change in level between living spaces, the existing rear facade window is opened up and new steps introduced to create a visual and physical

connection between rooms. Extensions to the side and rear of the existing kitchen allow for a generous cooking and entertaining space, with an enlarged bay window dining area which echoes the smaller original bay. The project is realised in a resourceful manner, with reclaimed brickwork, a stained plywood kitchen, many ''found'' pieces of furniture integrated into joinery, and a light touch refurb to the upper floors to create simple and calm interiors. Throughout, the house is insulated internally, which along with new double glazed sash windows and solar power, creates a home with much lower heating

and energy requirements.
