Boat House, London N1
Conversion of a large, double level office boat into a holiday let on the Regents Canal. Two simple, shed-like volumes sit within the generous length of the boat, providing contained bedroom and bathroom spaces at either end. In the centre of the plan, the space remains open as a kitchenette and dining space which you descend into from a mezzanine living room at deck level. A sustainable alternative to MDF - Eco board - made from agricultural waste, is used throughout and expressed, whilst being carefully but simply screwed together to allow for future dismantling and re-use. Other surfaces are proposed such as stained Eco board and tiles from recycled content. A new tent-like, patterned ceiling is introduced, concealing the familiar bowed arch of the boat roof, adding an ambiguity to the space.
Status: Design development.
